CHAPTER 20

POPE

I’m nearly at the police station when someone jumps on my back—and not exactly in a playful way. There’s something desperate about the hands clasped beneath my neck.

“Pope!” the person shouts, and I realize that it’s Kie. I put my hands over hers, and she drops back down to the ground, satisfied that she has my full attention.

“I’m late for work,” I say.

“No, you’re not,” Kie counters. “If anything you’re early.”

Technically, she’s right. But I like to get in early every day, which makes on time late.

“What’s up?” I ask finally.

“Hey,” Kie says suddenly, her face softening. “I’m sorry about the other day, on the beach. I was just so upset, and you were being so nice, and I just—”

“You took out your frustration on me.”

“Yeah,” Kie admits. “I don’t know if I could’ve done that to anyone else.”

Something in her tone makes that sound like a compliment. I think about what Dr. Anderson said, about how we take our frustrations out on the people we’re closest to. Is Kie saying—without saying it—that she’s closest to me?

Scientific Question: Just how much can be said without being said?

Hypothesis: One Pogue can communicate to another with silences in between the words she says out loud.

Scientific Method: Listen between the lines during every conversation.

Conclusion: Results pending further investigation.
